Member Spotlight: Meet Komel Caruso
My parents immigrated to the US in 1974 and moved to the small town of Bedford, Ohio, where they raised my sister, my brother and me. My father was our family's original entrepreneur - he opened his veterinary practice right in Bedford and still practices to this day. Growing up, I didn't realize how brave he was - to move to a foreign land, far from his family, to give his new family a better life. He had to be successful - he didn't have his parents or family to help him - he did it all on his own.
My parents always emphasized the value of education - "That is something no one can ever take away from you," they would always say. I went on to get my undergrad degree from Michigan (GO BLUE!) and my Masters from NYU, where I focused on marketing. I spent nearly 20 years in the education industry, focused on marketing, sales, business development, and customer experience. I have worked on the ground, leading teams and managing brands during my career.
My sister, Dr. Somi Javaid, a board-certified OBGYN, opened her first practice in 2015 in Cincinnati, OH, with a focus on general gynecology, menopause, sexual healthcare, weight management and aesthetics. I began to help her grow her business on a part-time basis and we started to see women from all over the country (30+ states) and multiple countries travel to our 1st location in Cincinnati, OH to access the care they deserved (within an insurance-based system.) They had felt unseen and unheard in our current, broken healthcare system.
Having so many women travel so far to see us for care was incredible, humbling, but also sad. Why did so many women have to travel to see us? Why couldn't they find menopause care and sexual health care? That is when we decided to scale and open more clinics so that women do not have to travel to access the care they deserve. In 2021 we raised $10M to expand our footprint (physical & virtual) and we are close to making an exciting announcement about further expansion!
